I also have to ask why you are so against Vista? With all things aside, the security features present greatly out match what is available in any version of XP. Granted UAC is far too flamboyant, disabling it is easy and you are still left with several security features left intact.

As for Linux / Mac security, I have a sneaky suspicion that if either one of these gain any substantial user base, we'll see a lot more security issues arise.

Per your suggestion: I ask why............look at xp and the issues it had as it came out.......... now at service pack 3. Look at the previous os systems and you will see a learning curve in each. I have been a beta tester since day one it has been a good system as long as your a knowledged user. It has a look and feel of a mac without the mac cost. First uninstall any bundled junk then get rid of any dell or hp anitvirus software and purchase a well known brand. Then I can tell u this system side by side will blow the doors off xp. Only issue I have is the slowness of the industries to get the right drivers and software out there. OH PS xp home will soon be phased out..............Then comes XP Pro?
